The International Day of Education is observed annually on January 24th. This day serves as a time to reflect on the importance of education as a valuable source of knowledge and a key driver in breaking the cycles of poverty and inequality, ultimately contributing to building an inclusive society.
This year’s theme, "AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation," highlights the growing influence of artificial intelligence in enhancing access to education by optimizing teaching and learning methods. It also prompts us to consider how we can maintain our agency and create positive changes in society amid these advancements. As we reflect on the advancement of AI, let us be reminded that the struggle to access basic technology remains a challenge for many.
As a dyslexic who relies on AI technology to read and sometimes write, I feel fortunate to have access to the tools that support me. However, many dyslexics and individuals with other specific learning difficulties do not have the same access due to various factors, such as their geographical location.
Research indicates that children from sub-Saharan Africa are at a higher risk of educational exclusion. Moreover, unequal access to AI technology can lead to misconceptions, where some children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) may be unfairly labelled as lazy or stupid. This misconception can lead to further secondary issues for them. Additionally, adults with disabilities in higher education may struggle to access text materials necessary to complete assignments or navigate educational spaces effectively.
As we reflect on the International Day of Education, let us think of those struggling to access AI technology, which could help them enhance their learning experiences and feel included in their educational settings. I hope that as each day passes, we can continue to act with purpose and raise awareness of the need for equitable access to education for everyone.
